I open my mouth wide
To let the moths out
The dust and dirt and grit
The layers and layers of pain
The remnants of clay masks
From years, decades, centuries, eons
Of woman
Of men
Confusion
We do not know who we are anymore
Caked on grit
Layers of boils
Numb
We don’t feel it anymore
Day after day after day of monotony
Grinding through paychecks
Detergents
Paperwork
Harsh words
Slouching through cold mud
Cleaning up messes
Putting things in order
It is so thick down here
We don’t expect solace anymore.
You
Can you please just listen
Turn your head to face me
Let me in with your sparkly eyes?
For the count of one line of song
Open yourself to me
For a split second
Hear my words
I love you.
Take them in
Even if you
Don’t know what to say
Don’t have time to think
Don’t want to sit
Inside the mineshaft
Of your own heart
To produce an honest answer
Or an honest silence
In response.
Just
Take
My
Words
In
Because they come from
A human being
Because they are true
For me
And this is the gift
Of humanity
To be honest
Naked
Open-hearted
In speech
To be
True.
